Increased leucocyte apoptosis in transfused β-thalassaemia patients.
This exploratory study assessed apoptosis in peripheral blood leucocytes (PBL) from β-thalassaemia patients receiving chronic transfusions and chelation therapy (deferasirox or deferoxamine) at baseline, 1, 6, and 12 months. At baseline, thalassaemic PBLs presented 50% greater levels of Bax (BAX), 75% higher caspase-3/7, 48% higher caspase-8 and 88% higher caspase-9 activities and 428% more nuc...

A controlled trial of continuous chelation therapy in regularly transfused children with homozygous beta-thalassaemia has been in progress at the Hospital for Sick Children since April 1966. In the sixth and seventh years of the trial the effect of this treatment on iron overload has been assessed by estimating serum ferritin levels and liver iron concentrations in both chelator-treated and con...

متن کاملSeropositivity of hepatitis C, hepatitis B and HIV in chronically transfused β-thalassaemia major patients.
The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency and trend of transfusion transmitted infections (TTI) in chronically transfused β-thalassaemia major (TM) patients with reference to the duration of transfusions. A cross-sectional study was done on 160 β-TM patients and 5517 healthy blood donors to find out the prevalence of HCV, HBV and HIV infections. Out of 160 patients, 21 cases (13....
